Glue, which he is holding 2000 Years
Roman legionnaires repaired their weapons with super glue, which keeps even after 2 thousand. Years. The website informs about the results of the analyzes of German experts “Discovery news”. Ancient glue was used, among others. for attaching silver laurel leaves to legionnaires' helmets. These items can be seen on display at the Rheinischen Landes Museum in Bonn. – This is a sensational discovery and great happiness, that traces of this substance could be detected after two thousand years – he said “Discovery News” Frank Willer from this museum. Willer found traces of super glue while analyzing the helmet discovered in 1986 R. near the German city of Xanten in North Rhine-Westphalia. Formerly there was a Roman camp there, and later – the Roman city of Colonia Forms Trajan. The helmet may be from the first century. p.n.e., and the museum is due to renovation. Willer discovered glue on it by accident, by taking a metal sample from the helmet with a tiny saw. The sawing heated the surface of the helmet causing it, that the silver laurel leaves on it began to peel off, pulling the threads of glue with you. The expert was surprised to see, that despite such a long contact with moisture and air, the adhesive did not lose its properties.
There is quite a lot of substance on the Xanten helmet, so that you can try to define, what it was made of. According to Willer, it was made of bitumen (viscous mixture of organic substances), resinous substances and animal fat. So far, the Germans have failed to recreate the Roman glue. They speculate, that the recipe assumed the addition of unlimited substances to it, np. soot, sand and quartz, making the whole thing more sticky.
