1200 words of the Polish language is enough
Just master it 1200 the most frequently used words in Polish, to start using it – philologists from the University of Bialystok believe. They are developing a dictionary, which is to help people learning Polish from scratch and their teachers. The dictionary is created by a group of philologists and students led by prof. Piotr Wróblewski. Assumptions and the status of work on the publication by prof. Wróblewski presented during the 6th Polonia Education Forum, which ended on Tuesday in Białystok. As Wróblewski said, the dictionary will consist of approx. one thousand two hundred words, which every person starting to learn the Polish language should master during the first year of education. “There is a lexical minimum to be included in this dictionary, that is, words, which are needed to communicate with each other, the most necessary” ? Wróblewski told PAP. The publication will gather a collection of the most frequently used words in the Polish language, selected on the basis of the frequency dictionary of this language. The words will not be translated into any other language, therefore at least in the first period of study, they will be more helpful for language teachers than for their students. The authors anticipate providing information, to which parts of speech the words belong, variations of more difficult words, such as: grind, sex, radio, and examples of the use of the so-called. homonyms, that is, words with the same sound, but having a different meaning. According to Wróblewski, the dictionary will be especially useful for teachers teaching Polish in Russia and Belarus, and it is prepared from this angle. It will allow to expand the student's vocabulary in a controlled and adapted to the language level. According to Wróblewski, for a lot depends on it, whether learners learn the most common words in a given language first.
For example, a person, which, in the opinion of Wróblewski, learn two thousand words from the top of the English language frequency list, she will understand 80 proc. text written in that language. Wróblewski stressed, that this is the first attempt to create such a dictionary in Polish. Work on it will last until the end of the year, and the Polish Community will be responsible for the publication of the publication.
