The doctor operated on the child with a home drill
A doctor at a provincial hospital in Australia saved the life of a boy wounded in the head on Friday, by operating it with a homemade drill – reported the AP agency citing Wednesday's Australian newspapers. Micholas Rossi fell off his bike on Friday and hit his head on the pavement. The accident happened in the small town of Maryborough, Victoria (Southeast Australia). Once the child has arrived at the hospital, was losing consciousness again and again. Doctor on duty, Rob Carson realized quickly, that a 13-year-old boy suffers from internal hemorrhage. Carson knew, that he only had minutes to do so, to open the skull and relieve pressure on the brain. But the small hospital did not have the equipment for neurological operations, so Carson decided to use an ordinary drill. “Dr. Carson told us: “I will have to drill (…) to relieve pressure (exerted) on the brain, we have a chance for one try. And only one” – the boy's father, Michael Rossi, told the newspaper “The Australian”. Carson called a neurosurgeon in Melbourne, who gave him treatment instructions on the phone, which the provincial doctor had never done before.
The specialist explained where to drill the hole and what the depth should be. After successful surgery – in which the clot was removed – the child was transported to a larger hospital in Melbourne. On Tuesday, on yours 13 birthday, the boy was released home.
