A resident of a tiny island wants independence

65-summer British sailor Stuart Hill, the only inhabitant of the microscopic islet of Forewick Holm, which is part of the Shetland Islands, is ready to declare its independence. He wants to detach the island from Great Britain, withdrawal from the European Union and name change to Forvik Island – British media reported on Thursday. Independence will be formally announced on Saturday. Hill chce, that the island would have the status of British crown possessions, like the Isle of Man in the Irish Sea or the Channel Islands in the English Strait. On an island slightly above 1 ha there will be no tax on individual income, VAT, corporate or local tax. The local currency is to be introduced later this year – gulden, flag and postage stamps will be issued. Hill, known as Captain Calamity (Captain Misfortune), is of English origin. He came to the Shetland Islands in 2001 year, when the yacht, which he wanted to sail around the British Isles, has crashed, and he himself was rescued by the Shetland rescue services. Hill's intention is to convince 22 thousand. inhabitants of the Shetland Islands, to break away from Britain and introduce feudal laws. He argues, that the legal title of the British government to the Shetland Islands, colonized in the 9th century by the Vikings, raises reservations. As he established, The Shetland Islands passed into the hands of the Scots in 1469 R., when Denmark's then king Christian pawned them with the Scottish monarch James III, because he needed money for a dowry for his daughter.

He never paid the loan back. The story speaks volumes – According to Hill – behind this, that the Shetland Islands would have the status of self-governing property of the British Crown. Another benefit of Shetland's new legal and political status would be this, that the inhabitants would have rights to the oil fields of the North Sea. Hill turned to the Shetland Islands authorities for support and legal assistance. Its representative Morgan Goodlad noted, however, that before Hill's application could be processed, should take care of the formal side – to have a permanent residence on Forewick Holm. A two-person tent cannot be considered such, currently serving Hill as a home.
