They saved themselves from the Titanic, because they were rude
An Australian researcher discovered, that many more Americans were saved in the Titanic disaster, than the British, because US passengers unscrupulously pushed their way to the lifeboats, while the cultured and reserved British calmly waited their turn. David Savage from Queensland University of Technology analyzed four major maritime disasters in terms of human behavior in extreme situations, taking into account economic and personality factors. The study showed, that despite the threat of death, most passengers respected the rule “first women and children”, however, another regularity became apparent during the evacuation: many British nationals have given up their seats in the lifeboats, because the Americans did not respect the basic principles of good manners and were unceremoniously struggling through the politely queuing crowd.
