Millions spent on protecting the species, which was not there
The English county of Leicestershire has spent £ 1 million protecting a rare newt variety at the site, in which the presence of this species was not finally confirmed. In line with EU law ordering the protection of great crested newts, officials paused on 3 months of construction of an important bypass and spent huge sums on security and special fences, which were to ensure freedom for non-existent amphibians. Costly measures were taken on the basis of expert reports, who stated, that there may be a nest with a few rare newts near the construction site.
