Proposal to restore the gladiatorial fights in the Colosseum
The proposal to restore the gladiatorial fights in the Colosseum was presented by the administrator of archaeological monuments in the Roman authorities – informs on Friday “The Republic”. In his opinion, this way viewers will be able to feel the atmosphere of antiquity and get to know those times better. The idea met with opposition from those, who see it as a Disneyland show – adds the newspaper. – We need to stop thinking of museums as a collection of ancient relics, often poorly illustrated and explained – said Umberto Broccoli, quoted by the journal. At the same time he assured, that his idea is as serious as possible and it is none of it “clownery”. According to him, such museums, like the Colosseum should “speak to the audience in a new language” restoring the scenery of ancient times. – Reproduce the noise, as it reigned at the time, smells, how it felt in the streets; this is the only way to make it, that a visit to such a museum, like this, will be an experience, which is not forgotten – stated the supervisor of monuments from the Roman magistrate.
According to his idea, gladiatorial duels may be accompanied by reading Seneca's writings about their lives. Then Broccoli paid attention to this, that vulgarity should not be feared, which would have to accompany such performances. – Gladiators were vulgar, slow down, they stank and cursed – added. – Why not show them like this, what they really were? – asked the superintendent from the Eternal City.
