Fish help maintain a good memory
Eating fish, has long been considered healthy for the brain, indeed, it positively affects the functioning of the neurons of middle-aged and elderly people – according to scientists in the journal “Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry”. Researchers from the University of Manchester in collaboration with colleagues from various European centers showed, that middle-aged and elderly people with higher vitamin D levels have better cognitive abilities, than people of the same age with low levels of vitamin D in the body. As scientists emphasize, a significant part of vitamin D is formed in our skin under the influence of sunlight, but the other important source of this valuable vitamin is oily fish. The study covered over 3000 people aged from 40 do 79 Years. Scientists have observed, that people with higher vitamin D levels perform better on neuropsychological tests, allowing to assess the ability to focus and maintain attention as well as the speed of information processing.
The authors of the study showed, that the link between high vitamin D levels, and the capacity of the brain is most evident in people after 60 age. Scientists emphasize the need for further research to explain the role of vitamin D in alleviating the effects of cognitive decline in the elderly.
