Temperature affects feelings

if you want to, for someone to like you, give him something warm, scholars advise. Research by Professor Laurence Williams, a psychologist at the University of Colorado proves, that our attitudes towards other people may change depending on the temperature. The scientist conducted his experiments in a rather tricky way. each of 41 volunteers from the first study were introduced to the psychologist's office by a person loaded with a notebook, with a pen, notes and – most importantly – a cup of soda. While driving the elevator, the introducer wrote down the data of the patient in the notebook. To do this, asked the visitor to hold a cup. And here was the dog buried: there was either warm coffee or iced coffee in the mug. After reaching the psychologist's office, the participants read a text about a fictional person. Then they assessed her personality. As it turned out, these ratings differed depending on this… what drink the evaluators had previously held in their hands. Persons, who warmed their hands against the coffee mug assessed the character of the described person as “warmer” than people forced to hold a cold drink. In the second experiment, volunteers were asked, to assess the therapeutic effect of warm or cold compresses. But it was just an excuse. As a result, the participants came into contact with objects of different temperatures.

The real object of the study was disguised as a reward for participating in the survey. The participants could choose something for themselves or a gift voucher “for a friend”. Both awards were of equal value.

Turned out, that when making this selection, the influence of temperature was also visible. Persons, who previously touched cold compresses, more often chose something for themselves. Those of the participants, however, who previously held hot compresses, they were more likely to give a gift to a friend.
