In a year he read the entire dictionary, 22 thousands of pages
The American took on an unusual task – decided to read an English dictionary from cover to cover. It is only 22 thousands of pages… 22 thousands of pages, that is a dictionary of the English language – would anyone like to read something like this in full? It turns out, that yes! Ammon Shea, 37-a year-old American living in New York has just finished reading the Oxford English Dictionary, one of the most famous and respected dictionaries of the English language. Ammon had been preparing for this task for a long time. Why such an unusual project? Ammon began reading dictionaries at the age of 10 Years. Since then, he would often hide in the basement of his local library to read dictionaries, sometimes after 10 hours a day. As he admits himself, it was not always an easy task. In a book I wrote documenting reading the last dictionary, our hero recalls resignation, which he felt upon reaching the letter “n”. Another crisis has come with words starting with “a-“, which they occupied 400 dictionary pages. – Sometimes I felt, as if I didn't know English at all. It was like visiting a foreign country, with a small phrase book as the only help in getting along – says Ammon. A lover of words and dictionaries has over a thousand of them. Despite many problems, encountered while reading them, still loves it. – Hardly anyone thinks, that reading an unnarrative set of words can be so developing and exciting – says Ammon about his unusual passion.
