You're delusional, because you drank too much coffee

The daily dose of caffeine may make you prone to hallucinations and delusions, if caffeine is consumed in excess – shows from a study by Durham University in the North- East of England. Scientists have established, that after drinking seven cups of instant coffee, people may think, for example. that they feel the presence of dead people around them, hear their voices, perceive things, which are not in the environment. Scientists asked 200 students participating in research on coffee drinking habits. In people who drink heavily, and has often been observed, that they are three times more susceptible to phenomena of the supernatural world than those, who drink coffee moderately. Frequent coffee drinkers have experienced the presence of ghosts, subconsciously they heard voices and imagined non-existent things or situations. According to the researchers, this may be the reason, that caffeine exacerbates the effects of stress. Under stress, the body produces a hormone called cortisol. The production of cortisol is additionally increased under the influence of caffeine, which can lead to hallucinations.

By itself, hallucinations are not a symptom of mental illness; they are regularly experienced by approx. 3 proc. completely healthy people. There is even a company in the UK to help people haunted by “voices”.

Caffeine is also found in tea, chocolate and energy drinks; it is a stimulator of the central nervous system. Consumed in excessive amounts (above 250 mg per day) leads to a state of intoxication manifested by irritation, nervousness, anxiety states, muscle contractions, insomnia, heart palpitations and headaches.
