Let's lose weight, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions

Maintaining a healthy weight could help reduce greenhouse gas emissions – he writes “International Journal of Epidemiology”. Based on a comparison of society, in which obese people pose 3,5 proc. with an obese society (40 proc. overweight people), researchers at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine estimated, that the difference in emissions of harmful greenhouse gases is 1000 mln ton. The researchers say, that since the food production process is one of the main factors influencing the global warming, leaner society, which would consume by approx 20 proc. less food, would contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Study authors Dr. Phil Edwards and Dr. Ian Roberts note, that transport related emissions would also be reduced, because the transport of lighter people requires less energy. – Maintaining a healthy weight is not only good for our health, but also for the environment. The heavier our body is, the harder it is for us to move, so we are becoming more and more dependent on cars – scientists say.

Increase in body mass index (BMI) is observed in virtually every country. In Great Britain in 1994 – 2004 the mean BMI in men increased from 26 do 27,3, and in women – z 25,8 do 26,9, which means an average weight gain of approx. 3 kilograms.
