Christmas carols
We associate carols primarily with Christmas songs, which are sung from the midnight Mass for at least the entire octave period. However, the genesis of the carol is completely different and it is not really related to the birth of Jesus Christ. Earlier function of this song, there was a joyful welcome to the New Year.
The first carols were sung long before the birth of Christ, and it was exactly in 153 year before our era. Then it was on January 1st, in ancient Rome, consuls ruled, On this occasion, New Year's songs were celebrated and sung. It is not known exactly when they turned into Christmas songs. There is only evidence of this, that a Polish Christmas carol with such a color came from 1424 year and its first line read: Be well, Angelic King ".
The most popular Polish Christmas carols include such titles as: When Christ is born, Today in betleyem, The Angel to the Shepherds spoke, When a pretty Virgo, or in the Silence of the Night, or Lulajże, Jesus. To one of the Christmas carols, which is translated into many languages, belongs Silent Night. It has been translated over 300 languages, as well as dialects.
Christmas carols are sung not only at the Christmas Eve table, but also during various theatrical performances about the birth of Jesus Christ, which are called Jasełki.
